A drug smuggler attempted to escape the Border Patrol near Fort Hancock in an SUV with two flat tires but was caught when the vehicle got stuck in a cotton field Thursday evening, Border Patrol officials said.

Agents seized more than 1,380 pounds of marijuana valued at $1.1 million and arrested the 24-year-old driver. Officials said that they used road spikes to try to stop the SUV but that the smuggler went on. The smuggler abandoned his stuck vehicle and ran, but agents caught up with him before he was able to cross the river into Mexico, officials said.
