Laredo, Texas – Amid a steady flow of Holy Week traffic, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Laredo Port of Entry maintained their vigilance and seized $2.3 million in cocaine Thursday in two separate law enforcement actions.
The latest seizure occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday, April 5 at Gateway to the Americas Bridge. A CBP officer referred a 1999 Chrysler 300 driven by Victor Armando Armenta Chavez, 21, a resident alien from San Jose, Calif. for a secondary examination. During the examination, CBP Officers noted discrepancies in the trunk area. A CBP narcotic detector dog alerted to the trunk and a non-intrusive imaging system scan indicated anomalies in the same area. Upon further examination, CBP Officers discovered bundles of cocaine in a trunk compartment. CBP Officers seized a total of 48.6 pounds of cocaine.
The cocaine has an estimated street value of about $1.5 million. CBP officers arrested Armenta Chavez and passenger Jesus Ramon Ramirez Ponce, 24, a Mexican citizen from Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico on federal drug possession and conspiracy charges and turned the pair over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents who investigated the seizure.
