CBP Officers Seize $8 Million Worth of Marijuana at Calexico Port

Saturday, April 28, 2007

Calexico, Calif. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers conducting border security operations at the east port of entry detained a 22-year-old U.S. citizen who allegedly tried to smuggle 2,768 pounds of marijuana into the U.S. on Thursday afternoon, officials announced today.

CBP officers conducting roving operations encountered the driver and Freightliner tractor-trailer as it entered the port from Mexico at about 3 p.m. A trained CBP narcotic detector dog alerted to the empty trailer and a subsequent X-ray confirmed anomalies in the front wall of the trailer.

During a thorough secondary inspection, officers discovered a non-factory wall compartment in the front area of the trailer. Officers subsequently extracted a total of 156 wrapped bundles of marijuana from the trailer valued at about $8.3 million.
