News From the Border

Providing the news from a different front but from a war that we must win as well! I recognize the poverty and desperate conditions that many Latinos live in. We, as the USA, have a responsibility to do as much as we can to reach out to aid and assist spiritually with the Gospel and naturally with training, technology and resources. But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

Deported woman challenging federal government

May 1, 10:34 AM EDT

PHOENIX (AP) -- The case of a Glendale woman deported to Mexico in February after living in the United States unlawfully for two decades could help other undocumented immigrants remain in the country.

If she's successful, Sylvia Uribe-Reyna's case would curtail the federal government's efforts to quickly deport thousands of foreign nationals without court hearings.

The practice is known as expedited removal and is viewed by some as a tool in securing the nation's borders. Department of Homeland Security officials say it keeps illegal immigrants with no legal right to stay in the U.S. from exploiting the nation's immigration system.

In the past, such immigrants were routinely released pending court hearings.

Most simply disappeared into the United States.
