U.S. Border Patrol Chief David Aguilar and U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords asked skeptical residents at a town hall meeting in Sahuarita on Tuesday to give permanent checkpoints along Interstate 19 a chance.

A permanent checkpoint would come with a "web" of support technology to combat the "funneling" effect that has routed drug and human smuggling into surrounding communities, Aguilar said.

About 175 people packed Good Shepherd United Church of Christ in Sahuarita to discuss the checkpoint, other border security measures and the new comprehensive immigration reform legislation recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that is co-sponsored by Giffords.
