Congress members, union leaders and the families of two former El Paso Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a drug smuggler in the buttocks are starting anew their efforts to keep the agents out of prison this year.

Former agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean are to surrender Jan. 17 to start serving their prison sentences. Ramos was sentenced to 11 years in prison and Compean to 12 years for violation of civil rights and tampering with evidence.

The congressmen have asked President Bush to pardon the agents.
