SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO, Son. - A wave of slayings of law enforcement officers around Sonora is prompting city police officers here to take added precautions to protect themselves.

Police Chief Miguel Angel Medrano Saavedra and other high-ranking officers of the department recently gathered to establish new rules of procedure for officers to follow while on duty.

Two weeks ago, Medrano had reminded his officers to take added precautions while on patrol or approaching suspicious-looking individuals or vehicles. He further recommended they wear bulletproof vests while conducting operations.
