We, as the USA, have a responsibility to do as much as we can to reach out to aid and assist spiritually with the Gospel and naturally with training, technology and resources. But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

`Help me,' jailed woman pleads

A distraught Canadian who has spent the last year languishing in a Mexican jail accused of crimes she says she never committed is pleading with Canadian officials to help clear her name.

Brenda Martin, who said she's lost 30 pounds during her incarceration in Guadalajara, wants Ottawa to help her obtain exonerating testimony from her ex-employer, Alyn Waage.

"I'm treated like I'm a murderer," Martin, formerly of Toronto, said yesterday in an interview with Belleville, Ont., radio station CJBQ. "I sleep right beside a lady who killed both of her children with dull scissors. I've had death threats."

Many do not understand that Mexico works under a Napoleonic from of government where you are guilty until you prove that you are innocent. If you are accused of a crime, you can go to jail immediately and it may be a long time until you get a court date. There is no such thing as the right to a speedy trial either. You may be able to post bail but most cannot afford it. -mm

Is there something that the general public of Canada can do to help this woman out? I want to do something and I've been looking on-line for an address or a contact but I'm not sure where to start. If anyone knows what we can do, please give me an idea. I can't imagine how hard its been for her and her family. We need to do something.
