News From the Border

We, as the USA, have a responsibility to do as much as we can to reach out to aid and assist spiritually with the Gospel and naturally with training, technology and resources. But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

Pot-hauler suspect dies in firefight

Santa Cruz County sheriff's detectives are investigating a fatal gunbattle between marijuana smuggling suspects and U.S. Border Patrol agents.

Tuesday night's shooting is only one example of escalating border violence, including attacks on Border Patrol agents, border-area law officers say.

About 8 p.m., a Border Patrol tactical team spotted five men backpacking through the desert near the Aliso Springs area just south of Tubac, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Antonio Estrada said Wednesday.

When the agents ordered the group to halt, at least one of the backpackers opened fire. One or more agents returned fire, killing one in the group, Estrada said.

The other four dropped their backpacks and fled, but were later caught by agents, Estrada said.
