While national attention focuses on President Bush's troop surge in Iraq, another surge much closer to home imperils national interests: the rise in violence along parts of the U.S.-Mexico border by desperate traffickers of drugs and illegal aliens.
Assaults against Border Patrol agents have more than doubled in the past two years. And thugs are using far more sophisticated weapons -- smuggled into Mexico from the United States.
Yet Mexico is more concerned that some U.S. agents recently ventured a few feet across the border to extinguish a brush fire. What's behind President Felipe Calderon's dour diplomacy?
