Vetoed English Bill Gains National Attention

Feb 13, 2007 05:15 PM

When Mayor Bill Purcell vetoed the controversial English First bill, he stirred up talk across the country.

The phones have been ringing off the hook and emails have been pouring in at City Hall as hundreds of people have voiced either their support or opposition to the Mayor's decision.

Immigration is a hot topic nationally, as evidenced by media exposure in media outlets like Fox News and CNN Headline News.

"We're getting calls from Baltimore, Washington D.C., as well as some folks in California," the Mayor's Spokesperson Molly Sudderth said.

Since Mayor Bill Purcell vetoed the English first bill, he has received more than 200 phone calls and nearly 500 emails.

"I think actually some of the emails maybe not from Nashville...have been negative, and maybe somewhat rude," Sudderth said.
