Calexico, Calif. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Calexico east port of entry arrested a Mexican male driver and seized 5,264 pounds of marijuana from a tractor-trailer rig that entered the port from Mexico Friday afternoon, December 1, officials announced today.
CBP officers found 237 wrapped packages of the narcotic valued at about $2.4 million hidden within boxes manifested as medical supply products inside the trailer of the 1992 International rig, officials said.
Officers ordered the tractor rig to the port’s non-invasive gamma ray inspection system at about 12:15 p.m. where CBP officers discovered anomalies in the merchandise and the way it was loaded.
The driver, a 32-year old Mexicali man, was arrested by special agents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and transported to the Imperial County jail to await arraignment in federal district court on drug smuggling charges. The conveyance and narcotics were seized by CBP. The case remains under investigation.
