El Paso Border Patrol Agents Arrest Convicted Sex Offender

Fort Hancock Texas – Border Patrol agents of the El Paso sector Friday arrested a convicted sexual offender with an extensive criminal history, who had been previously ordered removed from the United States.

At approximately 7 a.m., agents assigned to the Fort Hancock Border Patrol Station, on routine patrol, noticed three suspicious subjects near the Fort Hancock High School. After questioning the subjects, it was determined they were in the United States illegally and were subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Fort Hancock Station for processing.

During processing, the Automated Integrated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) revealed that one of the subjects was a previously deported felon. The subject, 39-year old Daniel Santos Amaya-Rodas, a citizen of El Salvador has several prior arrests and convictions for sexual crimes. Amaya-Rodas will be prosecuted for Illegal Re-entry and was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility.

Blythe, Calif. – Border Patrol agents assigned to the Yuma Sector’s Blythe Station arrested a subject with an outstanding warrant early Saturday morning near Blythe, Calif.

About 5:30 a.m., agents performing traffic observation duties on Interstate 10 conducted a traffic stop on a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier. Upon interview, the driver of the vehicle admitted to being a Mexican citizen illegally present in the United States. The individual was arrested without incident and transported to Blythe Border Patrol Station.

Fingerprint checks conducted through the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Information System revealed the subject had an outstanding warrant originating from Boise, Idaho for failure to register as a sex offender.

The subject had a previous conviction of Lewd Conduct with a Minor, Child under 16 Years of Age and was sentenced to 100 days in jail and four years of probation. In addition, the subject was previously prosecuted and removed from the United States as a criminal alien.

More than 900 illegal aliens have been sent packing after a three-week U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in California.

Half of the criminal aliens and fugitives arrested during the statewide sting have already been sent to their home countries. Since a large number of the illegals have faced previous deportation, immigration authorities immediately ousted them from the U.S.

The rest remain in police custody, awaiting travel arrangements for deportation or hearings before an immigration judge.

Brian DeMore, acting field officer director for ICE detention and removal operations in Los Angeles, issued a press release about his team's success.

"ICE is committed to protecting the integrity to this country's immigration system and that means ensuring that the removal orders handed down by the nation's immigration courts are carried out," he said. "As a country, we welcome law-abiding immigrants, but foreign nationals who violate our laws and commit crimes in our communities should be on notice that ICE is going to use all of the tools at its disposal to find you and send you home."

Immigration authorities sought out and detained a total of 905 illegal alien criminals in California – 327 in Los Angeles alone. Of the 327 arrested in L.A., 244 were fugitives aliens who have dodged deportation orders or who have returned to the U.S. after being evicted by authorities. Approximately 25 percent of L.A. illegals in custody have criminal histories, and one person has been convicted of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under the age of 14.

Border Patrol Agents Nab Two Men Wanted by Police

Las Cruces, N.M. – Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Paso Sector arrested two wanted criminals, in separate incidents, over the weekend while conducting routine patrol operations.

On Friday, Border Patrol agents at the I-10 Traffic Checkpoint, west of Las Cruces, arrested a United States Citizen being sought on charges in Deming, N.M. related to “Cruelty to a Child”.

Agents apprehended the wanted man, a 29-year old male from Las Vegas, Nev. after they encountered him in a green Nissan truck. The agents recognized the subject and vehicle from an information bulletin that was provided by other law enforcement agencies. The subject was turned over to New Mexico State Police.

On Saturday, agents from the Ysleta, Tex. Border Patrol Station arrested a citizen from Mexico entering the United States illegally who was wanted for “Aggravated Battery Resulting in Grievous Bodily Harm/Death of or with a Deadly Weapon”. The 32-year old Mexican national was taken into custody and entered into the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) where he prompted an alert as an individual wanted by Police. He was subsequently turned over to the El Paso Police Department for extradition back to New Mexico.

Border Patrol Agents Arrest Aggravated Felons

Tucson, Ariz. — Border Patrol agents from the Tucson Sector arrested two illegal aliens Monday that have significant criminal records, including negligent homicide. The arrests were made in separate incidents near the towns of Amado and Sasabe, Ariz.

About 9:00 a.m. near Sasabe, Tucson Station agents apprehended a group of 25 illegal aliens, one of whom is identified as Tomas Reyes-Lopez, a convicted felon who is a national of Mexico. Reyes was convicted of aggravated felony negligent homicide, failure to yield and driving without a license in Appling County, Ga. on Mar. 21, 2001. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and formally deported on Jan. 8, 2007.

Francisco Ortiz-Falcon was apprehended in a vehicle with two other illegal aliens near Amado, Ariz. at 11:30 p.m. During processing it was determined that Ortiz was convicted as a “peeping Tom” (felony) in Carrol County, Ga. He also was convicted for writing bad checks in Cherokee County, Ga.

Both Ortiz and Reyes are being held for removal proceedings.

Even before their deaths prompted a series of heated debates about the use of deadly force, detectives at the Department of Public Safety had their eye on Diego Ortiz and Miguel Dejesus.

The two were shot and killed by Joe Horn, a Pasadena man who thought they were burglarizing his neighbor’s home last month.

According to a DPS memo obtained by 11 News, the department was investigating the use of Puerto Rican birth certificates by Colombians seeking to obtain Texas driver’s licenses.

Both Ortiz and Dejesus had applied for licenses. Dejesus listed his country of origin as Puerto Rico, but both men were Colombian.

Apparently, the DPS is investigating hundreds of immigrants who may have used illegal papers to get Texas licenses.

But that’s not all.

A much wider probe has been launched into an organized syndicate of Colombians who are engaged in illegal weapons sales and home break-ins – just like the one Ortiz and Dejesus were involved in last month in Pasadena.

That day, Joe Horn and a shotgun stood in the way of the suspected thieves, but in many instances the suspects have gotten away.

Georgia Escapee Apprehended in Peñitas by Border Patrol

Peñitas, Tex. — Border Patrol agents assigned to the Rio Grande Valley Sector detained an individual wanted for escape from Troup County, Ga. The subject will be extradited to face charges.

The arrest occurred yesterday, when agents assigned to the McAllen Border Patrol Station responded to suspicious activity in Peñitas, Tex. Upon arriving, ground agents witnessed several subjects wade the Rio Grande River and board a maroon Pontiac Grand Am. Nearby agents executed a vehicle stop on the Grand Am and proceeded to question the occupants as to their citizenship. All occupants were found to be Mexican nationals illegally present in the United States. The subjects were then taken into custody and transported to the McAllen Border Patrol Station for further processing.

At the station, the subjects’ fingerprints were entered into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) for a check of their criminal history. One occupant, later identified as Erick Diaz, a twenty-five year old Mexican citizen, came back with a warrant from Troup County for escape from a correctional institution. Diaz was serving a ten year prison sentence in Georgia when he escaped from custody in 2003.

Diaz will be turned over to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department pending extradition to Troup County, Ga.

The driver of the vehicle was charged with alien smuggling.

CBP Officers at Presidio Port of Entry Nab Pair Wanted for Child Abduction in Colorado

Presidio, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials working at the Presidio port of entry on Saturday apprehended a grandmother and her daughter who were wanted in Colorado on child abduction charges. The women were transferred to the Presidio County Jail by the Presidio police department to await extradition after they were nabbed by CBP.

The apprehension was made Saturday afternoon when a 28-year-old woman entered the port of entry with her two children, an 8-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son. CBP officers queried the woman’s name and learned that she was wanted for child abduction in Montezuma County in southwestern Colorado. The woman was taken into custody. She is identified as Shanna Francine Lawrence of Dolores, Colorado.

CBP officers also apprehended 60-year-old Pamela Hughey Lawrence, the mother of the 28-year-old suspect and grandmother of the two children. A computer check by CBP officers determined that she was being sought in connection with the abduction of the children in August of this year. She was taken into custody.

Two illegal immigrants with criminal convictions in Georgia have been arrested separately in southern Arizona after re-entering the United States. Both face deportation proceedings.

The Border Patrol says Tucson sector agents arrested the two Monday.

Tomas Reyes Lopez, apprehended near Sasabe southwest of Tucson, was deported in January after serving prison time for convictions in March 2001 of negligent homicide, failure to yield and driving without a license in Appling County, Ga.

Francisco Ortiz Falcon, caught near Amado, had been convicted of a "peeping Tom" felony and of writing bad checks in two other Georgia counties.

Both would be subject to prison if caught entering the U.S. again.

Tuscon, Ariz. – Border Patrol agents assigned to the Nogales Border Patrol Station arrested an individual early today who has been convicted of sexual abuse.

Border Patrol agents arrested Socorro Morales-Tapia east of Nogales, AZ. She admitted to illegally crossing into the United States east of the Nogales port-of-entry. At the station, record checks through the IAFIS system indicated that Morales was convicted of "inflicting injury upon a child" and "sexual assault and carnal abuse" in California in 1999. She was sentenced to five years in prison.

Morales is being held pending removal proceedings and will be prosecuted for re-entry of an aggravated felon. If convicted, she faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Local Border Patrol agents catching more career criminals

Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents aren't just catching illegal aliens, they're catching more aliens with long rap sheets. According to Yuma Sector spokesman Andrew Patterson an increase in the number of agents assigned to the sector is enabling the agency to capture more criminals who previously got into the country unnoticed.

"We don't expect it to stop," Patterson said. "We are seeing a lot more of (illegal aliens with criminal records) trying to come across the border and we are catching them."

While having more agents in the field has contributed to catching these foreign-born career criminals, so has having improved technology such as border fencing, day and night cameras, ground-searching radar, sensors, improved field communication and unmanned aerial surveillance systems.

"In the past, we had to pick and choose our battles because we didn't have the manpower to go after a single individual or small group that had a few hours; head start because it left the border open and that was a problem," Patterson said. "We were catching them before, it just wasn't as often."

Nowadays, Patterson said, when agents come across a set of tracks, even ones that are several hours old, the agency has the manpower to follow the footprints without having to pull agents away from patrolling the border.

"Usually after a couple of hours, they have had time to get a prearranged ride or a drop house. Now there is more time spent hiding from agents who are their heels."

Although statistics were not immediately available on Monday, Patterson did say agents know anecdotally that the increase in Border Patrol staffing and resources in the sector has enabled the patrol to catch a larger number of those aliens with criminal records than in the past.

Agents arrest illegal immigrants with lengthy criminal records

Two illegal immigrants arrested in separate busts Tuesday night in the Yuma area have long criminal backgrounds in the United States, the Border Patrol said.

One of the two is a convicted sex offender who has a 17-year criminal background, the patrol said in a news release.

The other had been arrested on 26 prior occasions in Arizona on suspicion of such charges as drunken driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, assault, forgery, shoplifting, burglary, vehicle theft and criminal trespassing, the patrol said in a separate release.

The illegal immigrants, both Mexican citizens whose names were not released, had been deported from the United States on numerous occasions, the patrol said.

The sex offender was arrested after agents patrolling the area found evidence of an illegal entry near the Colorado River and County 20th Street. Agents followed footprints at the scene into San Luis, Ariz., where they arrested the man.

A background check found he had been arrested on prior occasions on charges such as lewd and lascivious acts with a child, sexual battery, drug dealing, battery, trespassing and loitering, as well as various immigration offenses.

He had been formally deported from the United States five times previously, the patrol said.

He will be charged with illegal entry into the United States and re-entry after deportation, and faces a possible sentence of 20 years in prison, the patrol said.
