January 15, 2008 11:15 PM ET MCALLEN, Texas (AP) - Five witnesses today testified a Mexican police commander was running a large-scale drug smuggling operation in Reynosa for the Gulf Cartel.
Although each pointed to Carlos Landin Martinez as the operation's leader, none had personally witnessed the former Tamaulipas state police commander committing criminal acts.
Landin Martinez is on trial in McAllen and faces ten federal counts of drug smuggling, conspiracy and money laundering.
The witnesses admitted participating in either bringing drugs into the United States or smuggling the proceeds back to Mexico.
1 of them, Francisco Camacho Barajas of Mexico City, told jurors that he worked for at least two men who smuggled cocaine for Landin Martinez.
