Supervisors shoot down deputizing of border agents
Published: 01.09.2008
No U.S. Border patrol agents will be deputized and provided with law enforcement powers by the Pima County Sheriff's Department after the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday heard near unanimous criticism of the idea from the public.
Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik had recommended the department deputize at least one federal agent to work with deputies in a special border crime team in rural areas.
After hearing numerous criticisms of the idea at the meeting, Bureau Chief George Heaney withdrew the recommendation, at least for further study.
Board members heard from residents of rural and metro areas, clergy, and social and health care workers that giving Border Patrol agents authority to enforce local laws would do nothing to reduce crime associated with illegal immigration. They said it could worsen conditions for reporting other crimes, such as domestic violence.
