Two alleged Barrio Azteca gang members, one who was allegedly collecting protection money and the other who was allegedly paying protection money, were denied bond Wednesday in a federal court hearing in El Paso.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Norbert Garney denied bond for Jose Martin Garcia, 38, an alleged sergeant in the Barrio Azteca, and Danny Tarin, 28, not a Barrio Azteca member but an alleged associate. Garney ruled that the men were both a flight risk and a danger to the community.

At one point, Garney said he was confused as to what Tarin's criminal responsibility was.

"He's being extorted?" Garney asked.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose Luis Acosta cautioned against thinking of Tarin as a victim. Tarin was an alleged drug dealer who paid protection money to the Barrio Aztecas. As such, he was not a member of the gang but was part of the gang's operational structure, Acosta said.
