Border Patrol agents seized 1,500 pounds of marijuana in two incidents over the weekend.
Agents spotted heavy northbound footprints on Saturday night near the village of Choulic on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation, indicating they were likely left by drug runners, said Mike Scioli, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman. They followed the prints and eventually came upon the group, he said.
The men fled and left behind 11 bundles of marijuana totaling 802 pounds. Agents were unable to catch any of the drug runners, Scioli said.
On Friday afternoon, west of the San Pedro River in Cochise County, a Border Patrol camera spotted a northbound pickup truck that had crossed the border illegally, Scioli said. Agents followed the truck on a border road until the two people inside abandoned the truck and ran back to Mexico. Inside, agents found 30 bundles totaling 699 pounds of the weed. The truck was reported stolen.
The 1,501 pounds has an estimated value of $863,075, according to figures from the National Drug Intelligence Center.
