News From the Border

Providing the news from a different front but from a war that we must win as well! I recognize the poverty and desperate conditions that many Latinos live in. We, as the USA, have a responsibility to do as much as we can to reach out to aid and assist spiritually with the Gospel and naturally with training, technology and resources. But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

Phoenix store halts paying for lot patrols

Pruitt's has been a focus in dispute over immigration

PHOENIX — The co-owner of a central Phoenix furniture store is suspending the hiring of off-duty sheriff's deputies to patrol his parking lot and control pickets during weekend illegal-immigration protests.

But Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Friday that he intends to keep up the patrol at and around the Pruitt's store, which has become a ground zero in the illegal immigration debate.

Michael Sensing said his store wants to get back to selling furniture and be done with the confrontations.

The store has drawn scores of protesters supporting the congregation of undocumented day laborers peddling their services as well as those opposing such rights.

For this weekend, at least, any protesters who show up will be asked to attend a prayer service at Mount of Olives Lutheran Church, across the street from Pruitt's.

"We hope there will be a mediation team that can work out a solution for this problem," immigrant advocate Salvador Reza said.

Sensing also is amenable to seeking a resolution, but he said Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon's office would have to facilitate any meetings.
