Chertoff cites public's call for secure borders

WASHINGTON -- Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff yesterday asserted that the department is moving forward with its efforts to build real and virtual fencing along the Southwest border, saying the American public has been "loud and clear" in its call for secure borders.
"We will continue to use every tool, resource and authority we have to answer that call," Mr. Chertoff said during a press briefing, adding that advancements in the construction of pedestrian and virtual fencing along the Southwest border will add to more than 284 miles of fencing already in place and enable the construction of 670 miles by the end of December 2008.
He also said U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will take "conditional possession" of a program developed by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems and known as the Project 28 system — a "virtual fence" of high-tech sensors, cameras and other equipment along a 28-mile stretch of U.S.-Mexico border near
