Santa Teresa, N.M. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents in New Mexico made another large drug seizure Tuesday, apprehending a juvenile driver of a SUV loaded with 928 pounds of marijuana.
The incident occurred at 12:45 p.m. yesterday after a Border Patrol agent and his CBP canine partner watched the driver of a Chevrolet Avalanche begin driving erratically east on NM Highway 9. The agent stopped the SUV and utilized the canine to perform a free air sniff of the vehicle.
The canine immediately alerted on the SUV. A total of 23 bundles of marijuana wrapped in cellophane and brown packaging tape was found in the bed of the truck.
The driver, a 16 year-old U.S. Citizen from Deming, N.M. told agents that arrangements had been made for him to pick up the vehicle in Columbus, N.M. The keys were in the vehicle, which was already loaded with the contraband. His ultimate destination is believed to have been Las Cruces, N.M.
