YUMA — President Bush returned to this Southwestern Arizona border region Monday nearly a year after his last visit to tout progress the U.S. Border Patrol has made in slowing illegal traffic since he sent the National Guard to the border last June.
After touring the border near San Luis — where he saw more fences, lighting, vehicle barriers, agents and National Guard observation posts that have led to decreased apprehensions — Bush told more than 400 people in attendance in Yuma that it shows the country is making progress on the first step toward comprehensive immigration change.
"This border is more secure, and America is safer as a result," Bush said during a 25-minute speech at the Yuma Border Patrol station. "Securing the border is a critical part of a strategy for comprehensive immigration reform."
