El Paso and Juárez police will share information on sex offenders, street gangs and stolen cars in an effort to combat cross-border crime, officials announced Tuesday.

Recently appointed Juárez Public Safety Secretary Marco Antonio Torres Moreno also said Juárez police would set up checkpoints in three weeks for vehicles southbound on the international bridges.

"We believe we can effectively diminish the auto theft rate," Torres said in a news release.

The new cooperation comes amid increasing auto thefts, rising gang activity and the recent arrests in Juárez of two men from the United States accused of sex crimes against boys.
