MEXICO CITY – A California couple has been arrested in Mexico and accused of illegally taking a 2-week-old baby, the Televisa network reported Thursday.

Local authorities told the network that the couple presented false papers for the baby, then told officials that a poor mother gave them the child because she couldn't afford to care for him.

The couple, both of whom carried California driver's licenses, were being held at a local jail, and face charges of trying to buy or rob a child.
