Smuggling group member sentenced in Arizona

The Associated Press

PHOENIX - A member of an immigrant smuggling group that physically abused its customers was sentenced to 19 years in prison.

Fabian Franco-Saenz, 21, of Mazatlan in the Mexican state of Sinaloa had pleaded guilty in 2004 to federal charges of conspiracy to take hostages and conspiracy to harbor illegal immigrants. He was sentenced in federal court Tuesday.

Prosecutors said Franco-Saenz raped a female victim at gunpoint during the hostage-taking in 2003 and was later sentenced to 14 years in prison on an attempted sexual assault conviction in Maricopa County Superior Court. The federal and state sentences will be served at the same time.

Seven other group members were convicted for their role in taking hostages, prosecutors said.
