MEXICO CITY – The humble tortilla, fundamental to Mexican nutrition and culture since before Aztec times, is at the center of a storm over rising prices that could mean trouble for new President Felipe Calderon.
Growing U.S. demand for corn-based ethanol has led the grain to its highest prices in 10 years and pushed up costs south of the border for tortillas, the thin, flat corn patties that accompany almost every Mexican meal.
Facing rising public anger and the possibility of a jump in inflation, Calderon has vowed to scour the planet to import cheaper corn and clamp down on price speculators.
Tortilla prices rose 25 percent to 10 pesos (91 cents) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) this week in Mexico City, and have gone even higher in other parts of the country.
