Arizona's growth is fueled mainly by minorities, the latest census estimates showed Thursday.
From spring 2000 to summer 2005, minorities accounted for nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of the state's new residents.
Among highlights of the 5 1/4-year period:
● The state added 808,660 people for a total of just under 6 million.
● Hispanics, growing about three times as fast as nonminorities, accounted for about half (49 percent) of all growth. They now number 1.7 million.
● Other minorities, including blacks, Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders and people of mixed race, grew collectively at more than twice the rate of nonminorities. They now total almost 658,000.
● The non-Hispanic white population grew by 9 percent. It now makes up 60 percent of the state, a decline from 64 percent in 2000.
