News From the Border

Providing the news from a different front but from a war that we must win as well! I recognize the poverty and desperate conditions that many Latinos live in. We, as the USA, have a responsibility to do as much as we can to reach out to aid and assist spiritually with the Gospel and naturally with training, technology and resources. But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

YUMA — A National Guard troop deployment to help secure the U.S.-Mexican border has exceeded President Bush's goal of placing 6,000 troops on the line by Aug. 1, the Guard's chief said Wednesday.

Lt. Gen. Steven Blum told the House Armed Services Committee meeting in Yuma that 6,200 Guard troops had deployed to the border by the start of the month.

"We are pleased to announce that we exceeded that (goal)" Blum told committee members, who were meeting here as part of a series of immigration hearings organized by House Republicans nationwide throughout August.

Blum said National Guard troops from 30 states were now on duty across the 2,000-mile border, where they are acting as "the eyes and ears" of the Border Patrol, which is charged with policing the line.
