News From the Border

Providing the news from a different front but from a war that we must win as well! I recognize the poverty and desperate conditions that many Latinos live in. We, as the USA, have a responsibility to do as much as we can to reach out to aid and assist spiritually with the Gospel and naturally with training, technology and resources. But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

2 tons of pot seized near Ajo

ARIZONA DAILY STAR

Border Patrol agents seized more than two tons of marijuana Monday after spotting a caravan of pickup trucks trekking through the desert near Ajo.

Agents were on patrol in the Tohono O'odham Reservation about 10 miles east of Ajo about 4:30 p.m. when they saw six trucks in the desert, said Jesus Rodri-guez, a Border Patrol spokesman.

Three of the six trucks turned around and headed toward Mexico after the drivers saw the agents, Rodriguez said.

The other three trucks split up and were later found abandoned, Rodriguez said.

All three were reported stolen out of Tucson, he said.

Agents found 2,295 pounds of marijuana in a white 2000 Ford F-250. In a red 2000 Ford F-250, agents found 2,561 pounds of marijuana, Rodriguez said.

The third truck, a red 2004 Dodge Ram 2500, was carrying large bags filled with food and drinks. The supplies were thought to be for drug smugglers who act as lookouts, Rodriguez said.

The trucks and marijuana were turned over to the Tohono O'odham Police Department, Rodriguez said
