News From the Border

Providing the news from a different front but from a war that we must win as well! I recognize the poverty and desperate conditions that many Latinos live in. We, as the USA, have a responsibility to do as much as we can to reach out to aid and assist spiritually with the Gospel and naturally with training, technology and resources. But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

Yuma law enforcement ready for Bush visit

Preparation for the president's visit has been a joint effort of all 14 law enforcement agencies in the county, including both American Indian tribes and Imperial County.

"Just about every local law enforcement agency has been involved," Wilmot said. "We're all jumping in to help each other."

Wilmot said YCSO will mostly be helping out with traffic control.

"There may be some traffic issues," said Yuma Police spokesman Mike Kohmetscher. "Every driveway, every intersection you have to watch."

For security purposes, law enforcement officials said they could not disclose what, if any, streets in and around Yuma may be closed to traffic while the president is traveling by vehicle.

Wilmot said the Secret Service has been in town for the past two days riding around with representatives from law enforcement.

"The biggest resource they were looking for help with was traffic," Wilmot said. "We basically all sat down together and told them this community works together. We don't care who is in charge of what. We will be there to help facilitate their needs.”
