But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

Volatile Weiers must calm down or be replaced

Our view from AZ Star: Although a Southern Arizona group made a tactical error on immigration discussion, the House leader didn't have to act divisively

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 05.09.2006

When elected officials and law enforcement officers from Southern Arizona went to Phoenix last week to discuss immigration issues with legislative leaders, they made a tactical error.

Members of the group, who planned to talk to House Speaker Jim Weiers and Senate President Ken Bennett, decided to hold a press conference before the meeting to express their objections to the immigration bills that Republicans are pushing.

Since Weiers and Bennett are Republicans, it would have made more sense to meet with them first, gauge their reaction to the concerns of the Southern Arizona people and then hold a press conference.

That tactical error, however, should not have unleashed the kind of divisive rancor it elicited from Speaker Weiers — though Weiers is known for his intemperate outbursts and lack of diplomacy.
