News From the Border

Providing the news from a different front but from a war that we must win as well! I recognize the poverty and desperate conditions that many Latinos live in. We, as the USA, have a responsibility to do as much as we can to reach out to aid and assist spiritually with the Gospel and naturally with training, technology and resources. But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

U.S. seals long tunnel at border

U.S. authorities used concrete yesterday to plug a portion of a massive cross-border tunnel discovered in January. It was the first step toward sealing the entire U.S. portion of the secret passageway.

Three trucks poured a rock and cement mixture into a 20-foot-high metal cylinder that had been placed vertically to block a section of the tunnel on government property just north of the border fence.

Lauren Mack, spokeswoman with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said a private contractor did the work at a cost of about $15,000. Authorities were able to place the plug into the tunnel after drilling about 30 feet into the ground.

The next step will be to secure funding to fill with concrete the entire half-mile portion of the tunnel that extends into the U.S. side. She said that work is estimated to cost about $2 million.
