NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico Police say three men were stabbed to death yesterday inside a prison in
Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. That brings the number of killings this year in the border city to 113.
Home-made knives were used to kill Mauro Antonio Ibarra, Ramiro Ramos and Juan Miguel Rivera. Police in the state of Tamaulipas say the men were alleged to be members of a prison gang.
The state prison in Nuevo Laredo has been plagued by violence despite promises by the state government to make it more secure. In March, three people were choked to death in the penitentiary.
Nuevo Laredo has been caught in a turf war between rival drug gangs fighting for billion-dollar smuggling routes into the United States. Investigators say the fight is also being fought out in the prison.
