The criminal workings of a sophisticated, ruthless and prison-based gang were detailed Wednesday before a U.S. magistrate by law enforcement agents, who said El Paso had been divided into zones for the collection of "quotas" on drug sales.

An underworld of coded letters, enforcers and hit lists was described at the arraignment for six alleged members and associates of the Barrio Azteca gang.

All face federal racketeering and conspiracy charges.

Investigators said the gang's world is discussed only in hushed tones because gang members, known as carnales, face retaliation for betraying secrets.
