Providing the news from a different front but from a war that we must win as well! I recognize the poverty and desperate conditions that many Latinos live in. We, as the USA, have a responsibility to do as much as we can to reach out to aid and assist spiritually with the Gospel and naturally with training, technology and resources. But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the El Paso area almost doubled their arrests of fugitive immigrants this year compared to last, ICE officials said Tuesday.

Agents arrested 601 fugitive immigrants in fiscal year 2007, which ended Sept. 30, in El Paso and New Mexico, compared with 307 immigrants in fiscal year 2006.

The immigrants arrested failed to appear for their immigration hearings, or they disappeared after an immigration judge ordered them deported.

Twenty of those arrested had criminal convictions in addition to their administrative immigration violation.

The agents were part of ICE Fugitive Operations Teams, which apprehended more than 30,400 undocumented immigrants nationwide in 2007, including 5,437 who had been convicted of criminal offenses.
