MERIDA, Mexico - President Bush pushed Mexico into the world arena on Wednesday, praising its conservative new president as "a very strong leader" and saying he wants the country to take a bigger role in diplomacy.
As he wrapped up a five-nation tour of Latin America, Bush made it clear he is hoping that Mexican President Felipe Calderón will be a pro-American counterbalance to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
"We spent a lot of time talking about Mexico's role in the world," Bush told reporters after meeting with Calderón in the Yucatan Peninsula city of Merida. "Mexico will lead diplomatic efforts for the common security and common prosperity, and that's an important role."
Calderón was more cautious, saying that Mexico wants to take on "a role of equilibrium, of consideration and leadership in Latin America."
