Mexico's leftist leader vows to register 5 million supporters of his parallel government
Lopez Obrador, who narrowly lost the July presidential election, set up the parallel government and declared himself Mexico's “legitimate” leader after staging massive protests that blocked the capital for seven weeks last summer.
So far, his government's members have largely dedicated themselves to holding news conferences to criticize Calderon.
Gustavo Iruegas, the parallel government's “foreign secretary,” said Lopez Obrador's government had set up booths where supporters could get their photo taken for a credential declaring them as representatives.
