Illegal immigrants are often easy pickings for robbers.
Sometimes the robbers may be the very people the immigrants have paid to guide them into the United States.
Robbery-assaults are the most common crime committed against illegal entrants, says Detective Sgt. Gary Anderson, head of the Sheriff's Robbery/Assault Unit.
"Just a little while ago we had a case down near Sasabe. Eighty-nine victims," said Anderson.
The group was making its way north through the desert when three armed bandits fell upon them, demanding the migrants' wallets.
After the holdup, Anderson said, the bandits disappeared into the desert and the migrants continued north.
About 30 to 45 minutes later, four more bandits fell upon the group, one of them armed with a pistol.
Those bandits forced the victims to strip so the bandits could search for money hidden in the migrants' clothing, Anderson said.
