PHOENIX (AP) -- Hundreds of demonstrators gathered across Arizona on Monday as part of a nationwide effort to show the country how vital immigrants are to the U.S. economy.

The demonstrators included those boycotting jobs, those given the day off to take to the streets and students skipping school - often with permission. Many of the absences were felt in the businesses and classes they left behind.
