News From the Border

Providing the news from a different front but from a war that we must win as well! I recognize the poverty and desperate conditions that many Latinos live in. We, as the USA, have a responsibility to do as much as we can to reach out to aid and assist spiritually with the Gospel and naturally with training, technology and resources. But poverty gives no one the right to break the laws of another sovereign nation.

Coming to America: Legal immigration is easier said than done

Why don't illegal immigrants just come here the legal way?

Most don't qualify for a green card, as legal permanent resident visas are commonly known, because they don't have either a legal relative in the U.S. who can petition for them or an employer who can sponsor them.

But the wait for even those who do qualify is often years, sometimes decades, due to a system involving quotas, preferences and long backlogs.

Under quotas set by Congress, between 416,000 and 675,000 immigrant visas - including at least 226,000 family-sponsored and 140,000 employment-based - are allocated annually based on a preference system.

Once the visas are used up, new petitions are added to a backlog of requests. Most immediate family members of U.S. citizens are exempt from the caps.
