TIJUANA – The bodies of two city police officers were found Tuesday morning, and later that day a federal agent was gunned down and another seriously wounded in their office.

The motive for the killings and whether they are related is unclear, but police in Baja California have come under heavy fire in recent days.

A top state public security official, Manuel Díaz Lerma, escaped injury after gunmen fired hundreds of shots at his convoy and lobbed a grenade at his bodyguards' car during an April 25 ambush in Mexicali. Two bodyguards were injured.

In the most recent rash of violence, the bodies of Tijuana city police agents Alonso Eduardo Mercado Carranza, 32, and Gustavo Reynold Aguirre Alvarez, 32, were found before dawn Tuesday on a road in the San Antonio de los Buenos district, according to a city police report.
